Catholic Georgetown University to Fully Fund Campus Gay Center

Our take - It's really no surprise the extremes once-Catholic universities like Georgetown will go to to appease secular progressive and Gay organizations while sticking a finger in the eyes of Church leadership. Until a Bishop with some real backbone removes the Catholic designation from one of these apostate schools, devout Catholics will suffer these insults. These Gay clubs are notorious for using "tolerance" as a Trojan horse to get their footing on Catholic campuses. What goes on inside these clubs certainly violates everything Catholic moral teaching stands for. I doubt this college president has any idea what he has done. Then again...

Co-president of GU Pride, Scott Chessare, responded by exclaiming “We won!”

By Hilary White WASHINGTON, DC October 30, 2007 (LifeSiteNews.com) - The president of prestigious Georgetown University, the oldest Catholic university in the United States, has promised homosexual activists that the school will fully fund a center for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and "questioning" (LGBTQ) students by next fall. The pro-homosexual nature of the center is rejection of what is considered serious Catholic moral teaching.

President John DeGioia told media, "How do we respond to legitimate requests for a more supportive environment? We can continue to do this in a somewhat informal manner... or we can move forward in a more organized way, through more formal and institutional structures and processes. In this case, it is time for the latter."

On Wednesday October 24, DeGioia spoke to an audience of students and faculty expressing his "sadness" that Georgetown has too often been "hostile" toward the homosexual community. The campus newspaper, The Hoya, confirmed in an editorial that DeGioia "repeatedly committed himself" to each of the demands made by the campus homosexual activist group GU Pride.

DeGioia said, "At a Catholic and Jesuit university, [we] cannot advocate for policies or practices that are counter to Catholic teaching. Part of my responsibility as an administrator... is to ensure that nothing can compromise the integrity of our mission and identity."

Explosive ALL Video From Holy Cross

American Life League Video Exposes Holy Cross Heresy

In the video from American Life League students react with mostly apathy and puzzlement about the pro contraception and abortion conference at Holy Cross. One student says basically its no big deal and is entirely consistent since the college has "ABIGAIL," an organization of Gays, Bisexuals, Transgenders, etc. on campus (with college sponsorship I'm sure). Makes sense. Once you stoop to promote sodomy, contraception and abortion aren't a stretch.

Another student exposes the completely misleading statements of Fr. McFarland, president of Holy Cross, who claimed previously that the college was only "renting space" and had not endorsed the conference. It defies logic that Planned Parenthood and NARAL couldn't find equivalent accommodations in the second largest city in New England. In the video, another student claims everyone received an email telling them to feel free to attend the conference. I'm not saying Fr. McFarland sent the email but he was surely aware of it.

It sad to see so many young people with so little regard for the Church and her teaching. But why would they be any different? With such lukewarm leadership by these college presidents, they're left to the four winds.

One student in the video gets it and even used the word "heretical." I hope the controversy this created opened the eyes of others like her. More likely, she'll be ostracized on campus. Sad.

Who Are You?

You mislead young people when you say your college is Catholic.
You sometimes wear the Roman Collar but you long ago forgot your vows.
You promote dissent and call it academic freedom.
You favor non Catholics in admissions and call it diversity.
You preach a new multiculturalism as though the Church isn't already the most multicultural organization on earth established in every country on the planet.
You allow homosexuals to start and advertise clubs on your campuses and call it tolerance.
You openly flaunt Vatican directive and the local Bishop's decrees.
You provide a platform for enemies of the Church and call it an "exchange of ideas" but you offer nothing on behalf of the Church in the exchange.
You teach modernism, feminism, Marxism, relativism, and every other -ism except Catholicism in your classrooms.
You hire atheists, protestants, secularists, homosexuals, dissidents and nominal Catholics on your faculties and staffs, gradually eroding the Catholic character from your schools.
You let the enemy provide abortion services to your students by referring students from your campuses or providing links from your websites to Planned Parenthood and call it "health services."
You downplay your Catholic identity in recruiting and in public speeches.
You sneer at those who believe in the Incarnation, Redemption, Resurrection, Ascension, Spirit, Eucharist, Angels, Devil, Apparitions and all miracles.
You make alliances with large commercial entities with ties to enemies of the Church to enrich yourselves.
You lead young people into sin at grave peril to their souls.
You are more comfortable around political power than Church authority.
You say you provide "both sides" of issues as though the Church you represent is neutral, like some sort of media outlet.
You are so far gone you are not even aware of yourself anymore.
You are unable to reflect and pray.
You excuse bad behavior when it suits you.
You are the head of a once Catholic College or University.
You are today's Ivory Tower Heretic.

Losing the Forest Through the Trees

Our take - when an Ivory Tower Theologian at a liberal formerly Catholic university starts sticking up for blasphemous activity by a homosexual group, you can almost bet on what you'll find in his closet.

Jesuit priest and moral theologian Jim Bretzke of the University of San Francisco opined that "over-accessorizing and poor taste in make-up" are no reasons to deny Communion to gay "Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence"
10/25/2007 9:40:00 PM

By Joni Durling and Mary Ann Kreitzer -Catholic Media Coalition It is annoying when a moral theologian tries to act like a canon lawyer and gets it wrong. In addressing the, now notorious, October 6, 2007 distribution of Holy Communion to the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence (SPI) at Most Holy Redeemer (MHR), Fr. Jim Bretzke, professor of moral theology at the Jesuit University of San Francisco (USF), did just that in an interview with the San Francisco Chronicle.

The Chronicle quotes Fr. Bretzke as saying, "The general sacramental principle is that you don't deny the sacrament to someone who requests it...The second principle is that you cannot give communion to someone who has been excommunicated." He said such people are designated "manifest public sinners" in canon law.

Presumably, Fr. Bretzke referred to canon 915, but the canon says something different than what he implied. The actual canon reads:

Can. 915 Those who have been excommunicated or interdicted after the imposition or declaration of the penalty and others obstinately persevering in manifest grave sin (emphasis added) are not to be admitted to holy communion

Note that the canon addresses three different groups of individuals: the excommunicated, the interdicted, and others who persist in manifest grave sin.

To raise money, Catholic school auctions off dinner with Nancy Pelosi

You really have to read this article and the Q & A to appreciate the abject disobedience of many inside the Church and thinking of today's liberal Catholic. The Msgr. seems to be saying that since Bush took us to war, it's OK to give places of honor to pro abortion politicians like Nancy Pelosi. His "reasoning" is so twisted it hurts one's head to read it.

From California Catholic Daily:

Every year, St. Helena Catholic School -- situated in the Napa wine country -- has a benefit auction at the Rutherford Grove Winery called "Gala at the Grove." Guests pay $150 a ticket to bid on distinctive wines and other products to benefit the school. This year's gala included a unique item up for bid: "Dinner with the Speaker," an intimate dinner with House Speaker Nancy Pelosi. The winning bid for the dinner was $14,000.

Monsignor John Brenkle, pastor of St. Helena Catholic Church, part of the Diocese of Santa Rosa, is scheduled to join the winners at the Pelosi dinner. When he was asked the same question as Ritchie, Brenkle answered by invoking the Iraq war.

Brenkle: "What if we had a dinner with Cheney or Bush? Would you object to that?"

California Catholic Daily: "That depends on their stance with certain issues in the Catholic Church. You're offering this as a prize to raise money."

Brenkle: "What about their stance on war? They are the architects of this war, which is totally contrary to the wishes of the pope."

California Catholic Daily: "But you can be a Catholic and support the idea of a just war. You can't be a Catholic and support abortion in any way, shape or form."

Brenkle: "You cannot support this war I'm afraid."

California Catholic Daily: "So you can throw abortion out the window because you don't like Bush and the war?"

Brenkle: "No, but you put up with the imperfections of politicians. Nobody is perfect."

Santa Clara Law School to Honor Lesbian Leader

Comment: Another example of a Catholic college run amok. What kind of poorly formed conscience allows a head of a Catholic college to encourage the behavior described below? Given that the surrounding culture is extreme in its view of homosexuality, it is no surprise that a secular organization would reflect the decadence of the times. But the Church and its institutions needs to be a moral compass in all times and places. Given the actions of the local Church leads, there in little hope for action against this school unless alumni and donors act.

From Cardinal Newman Society:

Santa Clara University School of Law will honor lesbian activist Elizabeth Birch at a Celebration of Diversity Gala on Oct. 25. Birch is the former executive director of the Human Rights Campaign, the leading homosexual advocacy group.

A statement by the law school identified Birch as "one of the most recognized lesbian leaders in the country." In noting her accomplishments as an activist, dean Donald Polden said, "Ms. Birch serves as a role model for our students."

In a Feb. 24, 2005 appearance on Chris Matthews' Hardball show, Birch said, "I, for one, thank God every day that the pope cannot intervene and dictate the affairs of the United States."

Lifesite Slams Saint Anselm Over Albright Appearance

Catholic College Hosts Event to Promote Hillary Clinton Campaign

Speech given by Clinton friend and abortion 'rights' advocate, Madeleine Albright

By Meg Jalsevac MANCHESTER, New Hampshire, October 24, 2007 (LifeSiteNews.com) - The New Hampshire Institute of Politics, a campus initiative of St. Anselm College, a Catholic college, has scheduled a lecture for tonight by pro-abortion, ex-Secretary of State Madeleine Albright. The topic of the lecture is entitled: "Restoring America's Leadership: Madeleine Albright Speaks about Senator Hillary Clinton" and is part of a campaign tour that Albright is carrying out for Senator Clinton.

Albright is best known as the outspoken Secretary of State during Clinton's presidency in the 1990's. She has long been a promoter of 'women's rights' and has been a very public opponent of President Bush's re-institution of the Mexico City Policy which prohibits US funding to foreign agencies that promote or provide abortion overseas. Albright argued that such pro-life policies are "fundamentally undemocratic."

In 2006, Albright commended past NARAL president Kate Michelman for her work in the abortion industry referring to Michelman as "a voice for those who didn't have a voice and a brain for those who didn't have a brain."

Albright joined many other prominent abortion supporters, including Senator Clinton, as a featured speaker at the 2004 "March for Women's Rights" in Washington, DC. The March was a national effort to garner support for legalized abortion and decried the pro-life efforts of the Bush administration.

New President of Assumption College on Role of Catholic Colleges

This is a good sign, a Catholic College President who gets it, Francesco C. Cesareo, PhD of Assumption College in Worcester, MA.

"The challenges currently facing Catholic higher education can be traced to the late 1960s when profound structural changes impacted the religious orientation of Catholic institutions. While Catholic institutions became stronger academically - by imitating their secular counterparts - they paid little or no attention to hiring faculty with a commitment to and understanding of the religious mission of the institution; the sole focus was on academic credentials. The Catholic intellectual tradition, with its emphasis on the compatibility of faith and reason, became less prominent and, in many cases, was lost. Equally important was the shift in student demographics as fewer Catholic students attended Catholic institutions.

At some Catholic colleges, less than half the student body is Catholic. Add to this the trend toward secularism, individualism and the advocacy of a values-free education that does not acknowledge objective truth - especially moral truth - and Catholic institutions are left pondering how they can remain faithful to their religious heritage in meaningful and concrete ways. As Catholic institutions struggle with the tensions that exist between faithfulness to their religious identity and the exchange of ideas that one expects at a college or university, they also hear Pope John Paul II in Ex corde ecclesiae reminding them that these institutions must be places where "Catholicism is vitally present and operative." Catholic institutions have an obligation to engage the Catholic intellectual tradition."

Saint Anselm College Welcomes Abortion Supporter Madeleine Albright

Saint Anselm College, a leading heretical formerly Catholic college in Manchester, NH is welcoming Madeleine Albright, former UN Representative and Secretary of State from the Clinton Administration. If association were cause to reject Albright on a Catholic college campus, then her position in the radically pro-abortion Clinton administration would be enough. If you recall, Bill Clinton twice vetoed the ban on partial birth abortion and supported abortion on demand by appointing liberal Supreme Court Justices like David Breyer and Ruth Bader Ginsburg.

But in the case of Albright, we have more direct evidence of her support for taking innocent babies lives in their mothers' wombs. Albright has publicly spoken in support of abortion "rights" as at the April 25, 2004 rally in Washington, D.C. reported here.

Facts such as these are brushed aside by today's ivory tower elites like Fr. Jonathan DeFelice, president of St. Anselm College in the name of "academic freedom". Albright has something to say, after all. And she's not afraid of how many dead children it takes to say it.

Until heretics like DeFelice are called out, they'll continue leading young souls astray at grave peril to himself and his minions. But at least he gets to rub elbows with the like of Clinton and Albright and that's all he really desires.

Attention Cardinal O'Malley!!

Boston was once a major center of Catholic life and education. It flourished with strong support from the Irish, Italian, French and many other ethnic groups.

And now? It is a center of apostasy and shame. The state of Catholic Colleges is so bad that not one local Catholic college makes either the Cardinal Newman Society College Guide or the one put out by National Catholic Register. Indeed recent events and developments suggest these colleges are leading a full apostasy against the Church.

As reported in this blog, Merrimack College was the first stop for newly-elected secular progressive Governor Deval Patrick. His policies include support for gay marriage, abortion on demand without parental notification, expanded limitless embryonic stem cell research and cloning of humans, casino gambling and every other vice that the Church is against.

Boston College has likewise become a pit of immoral living. Seen on national TV was a proud group of BC women at the pro abortion rally in Washington DC wearing "Boston College Students for Choice" t-shirts and loudly proclaiming their support for abortion. On campus they maintain a link to Planned Parenthood and have hosted V* Monologues. Their dissident theologians are always summoned by major left-leaning main stream media for anti-Catholic opinions.

And then there's our recent story about the close ties between Emmanuel College in Boston and pharmaceutical giant Merck. The college even leases land to Merck for their Boston branch.

So corrupt are these once Catholic colleges that their sin cries to heaven for vengeance. But where is the local Bishop, in this case Cardinal Sean O'Malley? Is he not as strong as his neighbor bishop McManus of Worcester who recently warned Holy Cross College that their Catholic identity was in jeopardy? Why is this behavior allowed. Are these leaders not aware that they are alienating an entire generation of devout believers? Where is a parent to take their child if they want an authentic Catholic experience? Ohio? Virginia? When will O'Malley act in favor of Catholics? Is he too busy closing parishes and paying off abuse victims to restore Catholic identity to his archdiocese? Does he even care?

Emmanuel College's Deal With the Devil

From Lifesite News comes word about pharmaceutical giant Merck's involvement with Planned Parenthood. The profits they make by pushing the dangerous HPV vaccine on young girls, often by force of law, go directly to their support of Planned Parenthood, America's abortion provider. So what does this have to do with Catholic Colleges? Well, on the Emmanuel College (of Boston) website you find a section describing their corporate partnerships and right in the middle of it is Merck. Is Emmanuel not aware of Merck's dealings with Planned Parenthood? I doubt it but we'll await their response to our inquiry.

From Emmanuel College website:

"Taking into consideration Emmanuel's unique relationship with Merck Laboratories-Boston, Dr. Marley already sees great potential for future growth and partnered enterprises between the College and local businesses.

"The idea of innovation in teaching and connection to industry is a natural," she said. "Having Merck, which represents a significant growth industry in this region, on this campus is a wonderful opportunity, but I would also see the same opportunity for us in other avenues of the Longwood Medical area, especially considering our strong tradition with nursing and teaching. I see those as wonderful bridges as well." Dean of Graduate and Professional Programs (GPP) at Emmanuel, Dr. Judith Cox Marley

More on Fr. McFarland and Holy Cross

From Cardinal Newman Society:

Please Join Us for an Important Talk on...

"Preventing Teen Pregnancy: The Catholic Approach"

What Holy Cross Could Have Done to Address This Critical ProblemFeaturing CNS Love & Responsibility Program Director Dawn EdenTuesday, October 23rd at 7:00 p.m.St. Paul's Cathedral, Worcester, Mass.

Please join The Cardinal Newman Society, in cooperation with St. Paul's Cathedral and the Worcester Diocese’s Respect Life Office, on the eve before the College of the Holy Cross hosts a conference on teen pregnancy that includes representatives from Planned Parenthood and NARAL Pro-Choice Massachusetts.

Despite a strong and courageous statement from Worcester Bishop Robert J. McManus condemning the conference and asking Holy Cross to cancel the event, the college's President has steadfastly supported it and says he will let it take place.

In her talk, Miss Eden will detail how Church teachings on chastity offer a solution to not only the problem of teen pregnancy but also the wider problems of family breakdown-while abortion, contraception, and other "solutions" offered by Planned Parenthood and their allies exacerbate those problems. She will also place the issue, in accordance with Church teachings, into the context of what steps Catholic colleges can and should take to promote Catholic values on life, love and sexuality.

This event is open to the public and The Cardinal Newman Society encourages a strong showing of support for Bishop McManus's principled stand.

The Bishop and the Jesuit: Robert McManus vs. Holy Cross

Commentary from CatholicCulture.com:

One could fill a book with the ways in which schools "in the Jesuit tradition" have deliberately and defiantly undermined the Catholic faith of their students over the past forty years. The most recent example is the decision of Holy Cross College in Worcester, Massachusetts to host a conference sponsored by the Massachusetts Alliance on Teen Pregnancy.

The Conference will include workshops by Planned Parenthood and NARAL Pro-Choice Massachusetts, both of which represent positions fundamentally at odds with the teachings of the Catholic Church (not to mention the requirements of human integrity, the family and a healthy social order). Lest there be any confusion that the hosting of the conference might have happened inadvertently, Holy Cross president Fr. Michael C. McFarland, SJ has personally defended it against numerous critics.

Happily one of the critics is the local ordinary, Bishop Robert J. McManus, who issued a statement on October 10th warning Holy Cross that "it is my pastoral and canonical responsibility to determine what institutions can properly call themselves 'Catholic'." The bishop urged the administration of the College to "unequivocally disassociate itself from the upcoming conferenc...so that the college can continue to be recognized as a Catholic institution." However, Fr. McFarland has thus far defied even Bishop McManus.

Duquesne Catholic University President Stops Planned Parenthood Ads

What does an ad cost on Duquesne's radio station these days? 30 pieces of silver perhaps?

PITTSBURGH, October 15, 2007 (LifeSiteNews.com) - Dr. Charles J. Dougherty, president of Duquesne University, has directed campus-based radio station WDUQ to stop running advertisements for Planned Parenthood. He based his decision on the hostility to Catholic Church teachings by Planned Parenthood, the nation's leading advocate for abortion.

Planned Parenthood has launched a public relations effort to put pressure on the university to reverse the president's move. Cardinal Newman Society executive vice president Tom Mead said, "We applaud Dr. Dougherty's principled position. Planned Parenthood continues to probe Catholic colleges wherever it can, and thankfully in this instance Dr. Dougherty moved quickly to uphold Catholic teachings on life issues."

Texas Bishop Chastises Catholic University for Hosting Dissident 'Theologian'

Why does it seem these colleges cant find legitimate theologians who can explain and teach about true Catholicism? Is it just that sin is less boring?

University ignores bishop and refuses to withdraw Charles Curran invitation

By Meg JalsevacAUSTIN, Texas, October 15, 2007 (LifeSiteNews.com) - St. Edwards University, a Catholic academic institution in Austin, Texas, has been called to task by its local Catholic bishop for hosting self-proclaimed, 'Catholic theologian', Father Charles Curran.

Bishop Gregory Aymond of the Austin diocese has issued a letter to his diocesan priests requesting that they not publicize the lecture that is scheduled to be held Thursday, October 18th at the St. Edward's campus as part of the Most Reverend Bishop McCarthy Lecture Series.

Father Curran is a Catholic priest who has long been at odds with several of the Church's fundamental moral teachings. Because of his aggressive and vocal condemnation of the Church's teachings on matters such as abortion, contraception, and homosexuality, Curran was investigated by the Congregation for the Doctrine of Faith in the late 1970's and early 1980's. In 1986, at the recommendation of then-Cardinal Ratzinger, Pope John Paul II officially forbad Curran from teaching at any Catholic school and stripped him of the title of 'Catholic theologian'.

Bishop Warns College May Lose Catholic Name for Not Cancelling Pro-Abortion Groups in Conference

Jesuit priest president of College of the Holy Cross ignores bishop, defends inclusion of Planned Parenthood and NARAL workshop

By Meg JalsevacWORCESTER, Massachusetts, October 11, 2007 (LifeSiteNews.com) - Worcester's Catholic bishop, Bishop Robert J. McManus, has issued a frank condemnation of the decision by the local Jesuit-run College of the Holy Cross to rent their facilities for a conference featuring NARAL and Planned Parenthood workshops.

Bishop McManus has issued a scathing statement confirming that he has requested that college President, Rev. Michael C. McFarland rescind the invitation based on the conference's fundamental differences with Catholic moral teaching.

As previously reported by LifeSiteNews.com, the Massachusetts Alliance on Teen Pregnancy is scheduled to use the conference facilities at the Catholic college for their annual Teen Pregnancy Institute on October 24. The conference schedule includes workshops featuring a Planned Parenthood representative discussing "protection methods" and a similar NARAL update on initiatives to provide teen access to "low-cost, confidential health services and Emergency Contraception." Pro-abortion Governor Patrick Deval will be honored with a leadership award at the conference.

According to the local chancery, hundreds of complaints were received from Catholics around the country voicing outrage at Holy Cross' facilitation of a conference which so openly opposed the basic moral teachings of the Catholic Church on the sanctity of human life.

The bishop's statement maintained that the complaints were justified since, "The College of the Holy Cross should recognize that any association with these groups can create the situation of offering scandal understood in its proper theological sense, i.e., an attitude or behavior which leads another to do evil. Certainly it is understandable how people of good will could interpret the college's allowing presentations to be made by such groups as truly scandalous."

"The moral teaching of the Catholic Church on respect for life at all stages of its development is manifestly clear. Life is a fundamental good that must be protected and respected from the moment of fertilization to natural death. This teaching is so basic and important that it provides the foundation upon which much of the Church's moral and social doctrine rests. It is beyond modification and compromise.

"Holy Cross officials have replied that they will not rescind the invitation despite a host of complaints flooding their offices from alumni and others across the country. Officials explained that "Holy Cross in no way supports or endorses Planned Parenthood, NARAL, or other organizations that engage in or promote practices contrary to the teachings of the Catholic Church." However, the bishop's statement denied the possibility of this position saying, "I strongly contend that the confusion and upset to the Catholic faithful and others that flow from the perception that the administration of the College of the Holy Cross supports positions contrary to the fundamental moral teaching of the Church must be avoided."

"To deny Planned Parenthood and NARAL Pro-Choice a forum in which to present their morally unacceptable positions is not an infringement of the exercise of academic freedom but a defensible attempt to make unambiguously clear the Catholic identity and mission of the College of the Holy Cross."

President McFarland explained his decision to continue to allow the conference to take place while also attempting to explain that Holy Cross "fully affirms and promotes" the sanctity of human life. He continued to justify his decision in opposition to the bishop's statement saying, "Beyond the contractual obligation, it is important to emphasize that the college believes a meeting of adult professionals pooling resources, engaging in a dialogue and exchanging information is a beneficial way of grappling with pressing issues related to the health and well-being of Massachusetts teenagers and children."

"As an institution of higher learning, we are dedicated to the open exchange of ideas. As a Jesuit college, Holy Cross is committed to its mission of engaging with the larger culture on even the most problematic and divisive of moral and spiritual issues."

As the leader of his flock, Bishop McManus issued a warning to the Catholic college saying, "As Bishop of Worcester, it is my pastoral and canonical responsibility to determine what institutions can properly call themselves 'Catholic.' This is a duty that I do not take lightly since to be a Catholic institution means that such an institution conducts its mission and ministry in accord with Catholic Church teaching, especially in cases of faith and morals."

"It is my fervent wish that the administration of the College of the Holy Cross will unequivocally disassociate itself from the upcoming conference sponsored by the Massachusetts Alliance on Teen Pregnancy so that the college can continue to be recognized as a Catholic institution committed to promoting the moral teaching of the Roman Catholic Church."

Minneapolis Catholic College Requires Reading of Sexually Explicit Anti-Catholic Novel - A Handmaid's Tale

No surprise really. We previously reported that at St. Anselm College they use similar texts in English classes. Feminism has replaced the classics as required reading at Catholic Colleges and nothing seems to be done about it. Intellectual pursuit has been set aside in favor of feminization.

From Lifesitenews article:

"Atwood is known in Canada as a major figure in the ultra-feminist, anti-religious and largely state-funded literary establishment. When it was first published by McClelland and Stewart in 1985, the book was heavily criticized, largely outside Canada, as an anti-Christian screed relying for its appeal on the titillation provided by its frequent expletives and graphically depicted sex-acts, and a heavy-handed feminist ideology.

Despite this, the book remains at the top of charts in literary circles and has received and been nominated for numerous literary awards, including the prestigious Booker Prize. It is featured as part of the high school literature curricula in the UK, the US, Germany and Australia. It has been listed as No 37 on the "100 Most Frequently Challenged Books of 1990-2000" by the American Library Association, as parents continue to object to its anti-Christian and sexual content."

Ivory Tower Decay

From an article by Michael Barone on Human Events:

"Where did speech codes come from? There certainly weren't many when I was in college or law school. So far as I can tell, they originated after college and university administrators began using racial quotas and preferences to admit students -- starting with blacks, now including Hispanics and perhaps others -- who did not meet ordinary standards. They were instituted, it seems, to prevent those students from feeling insulted and to free administrators from criticism for preferential treatment -- treatment that arguably violates the Civil Rights Act of 1964 (although Justice Sandra Day O'Connor, the swing vote in the 2003 Supreme Court case on the subject, said they could continue another 25 years).

Racial quotas and preferences continue to be employed, as a recent article on UCLA makes clear, in spite of state laws forbidding them, and university administrators seem to derive much of their psychic income from their supposed generosity in employing them. This, even though evidence compiled by UCLA Professor Richard Sander suggests they produce worse educational outcomes for their intended beneficiaries and even though Justice Clarence Thomas makes a persuasive case in his book "My Grandfather's Son" that they cast a stigma of inferiority on them."

CHAIRMAN OF BOARD AT HOLY CROSS ALSO IS CHANCELLOR AT SCHOOL USING EMBRYOS

The chairman of the Board of Trustees at a major Catholic college in Massachusetts is also chancellor for a medical school that dabbles with human embryonic stem cells.

The chancellor, Dr. Michael F. Collins, was named chairman in 2002 and will head the board at the College of Holy Cross until 2008. It is his full-time job as interim chancellor at the University of Massachusetts Medical School in Worcester, however, that has drawn notice. That occurred last May.

As an assistant professor at the University of Massachusetts acknowledges candidly, "We employ a variety of embryological, cellular, molecular and genetic approaches. These include lineage analysis, chimeras, and embryo culture as well as time-lapse imaging, tissue specific knockouts, wholemount in situ hybridization and immunofluorescence. We also utilize embryonic stem cells for gene targeting."

The use of human embryos for stem-cell research has been condemned by the Vatican as tantamount to abortion, resulting as it does in the death of a human, albeit in the earliest stages.
