Tough To Be Devout in College

Chris Bowler being suspended by Saint Anselm College in Manchester, NH for not being Politically Correct. Lies trump truth. The case of Christopher Bowler is in the saddest tradition of show trials at America's colleges. What was the case about?

After a day of volunteering for Special Olympics, Chris spent the evening of February 10 with the King Edward Society where he was planning to join. On his way home, he stopped at the room of three friends who had a room full of guests who were drinking. When Chris said he'd been with the King Edward Society that day, one of the kids partying in the room said the King Edward Society members were a bunch of racists and that they had called him a n*****. Chris replied that the brothers had not called the kid a n*****. This was a charge the kid had been making since he had failed in pledging the fraternity.

Meanwhile the other two began calling the King Edward Society names and told Chris he was a p**** because he didn’t want to dance naked in front of girls and members of another fraternity (hazing that is illegal). When Chris likewise insulted the other fraternity, the kid joining there demanded Chris leave the room. As he left the room, the two continued to taunt Chris about King Edward Society, to which Chris responded making a crying gesture and told them to "Stop crying". After Chris left the room, one kid had him restrained by the other two and then sucker punched Chris in the face. Here is the photo the college never saw and wouldn't let Chris show:

Chris momentarily broke free and got a shot to his attacker's lip. Then he was restrained again while the three of them all flailed away at him. When Chris finally got free, he went upstairs and saw how bad the injury was to his eye. He returned later protesting loudly but no further punches were thrown. What his attackers did next was even more despicable. They fabricated a story that Chris had used racial epithets on one of the kids and had attacked another. And the College, in its politically correct posture, bought the whole thing!

In fact, the RA falsified the time of the incident to make it appear to have been prior to 2 a.m., did not report that the accusers were obviously intoxicated, failed to call campus security, did not check with Chris as to what happened, did not call for medical attention for anyone, and did not take Chris' statement until days later AFTER he had already filed a report with the Dean! Why? Perhaps because he was violating campus rules himself with a girl in his room past 2 a.m.? Talk about negligence and conspiracy!

Note: Take a stroll through this guy's hall sometime and you'll see more empties than your average recycling center. Apparently he's not familiar with the law on underage drinking or campus rules. In fairness though, his hall isn't atypical for this school.

Did the school enforce its own rules about fighting? Did the assailants admit their part in the incident? Why is only one student being punished? The attackers admitted in the hearing that one had struck Chris and that there had been drinking in the room but no charges were ever brought.

The suspension is for the remainder of the term meaning he loses credit for all work performed for this term and all tuition and fees, room and board for the term. Is that how you treat a three time Dean's List achiever with a first offense?

Question: How did a 150 lb. kid land a punch to the face of a 210 kid that works out all the time unless the bigger kid was either restrained or wasn't expecting it, as when it was the first punch thrown? Since the attackers claimed they were not restraining Chris, either one of the kids swung first or they are lying about not restraining Chris or both. Chris says both. If they are lying about this aspect of the situation, might they be lying about the rest? This picture does not show a wound given by someone defending themself. This wound was delivered by someone with intent to harm. Chris was outnumbered in the fight and in the hearing.

Question: Why didn't the college let Chris show the photos of his face at the hearing that showed the severity of his injury? Why didn't they ask for them during the appeal process?

Question: Why wasn't Chris allowed to call witnesses who could testify that the one kid had threatened previously to make

false charges of racism aganst King Edward Society while at St. Anselm? A letter had been sent to the board stating just that. In fact even EYE WITNESSES who would have been favorable to Chris were excluded from the hearing!! "We''e got enough, thank you," they were told. Enough what?

A subsequent letter was sent to the college paper. But instead of reporting that, they reported that the black kid said Chris failed to apologize. So why then did the kid ask for the the suspension to be reversed and have this photo taken of himself with Chris AFTER the alleged incident? And everyone who knows this kid knows what a joke it is when he says that "there was alcohol consumed in his room that night but denied drinking any himself." Right.

Question: Why did one attacker tell the administration that the punishment for Chris is too severe? (See Below)

Could it be that its because the whole thing was a lie in the first place? Why can't the college see that this was just an argument between friends where they said things they didn't mean and then apologized afterwards and continued their friendship? The school seemed to have an agenda to get rid of Chris from the start.

(5:29:12 PM): bowler(

5:30:27 PM): ok, i dont have to respond to this, but i am writing to let u know that i am writing a letter to the judicial board asking for them to reverse the decision they made(

5:30:58 PM): i do not want to ruin your life, as far as i am considered i did not want the case to go as far as it did

(5:32:48 PM): u were a friend

(5:33:05 PM): and i do not wish to see anything like this happen

Question: Why is the college so quick to accept the version of events from a group that had just been written up the previous week for an alcohol infraction (Beirut game) and had a lot to lose by getting in trouble for another one? Why doesn't the college believe the devout Catholic kid who has no history of getting in trouble and even admitted to drinking (though not on campus and not to excess) that night?

Question: Why wasn't anyone brought up on drinking charges? Possibly because that would have meant severe punishment for the kids who brought the charges against Chris? Is the college covering up for the others while punishing Chris? The Dean claimed to Chris' parents that Chris never mentioned the others' drinking but it's right in his statement submitted to the Board by that Dean! And witnesses admitted there was drinking going on.

The Dean also promised an objective and fair appeal process and then twice advised Chris to start packing BEFORE there had been a review and decision!

Who is Chris Bowler? Chris is a sophomore in the Politics major. He is a devout Catholic and is well known to many clergy. He has no record of disciplinary action whatsoever. He has served the poor in inner cities since he was 14, has led Catholic Youth Groups and has been to World Youth Day as well as Medjugorje in Bosnia He's the last person you'd expect to receive a harsh punishment for a first offense at a Catholic College.

Question: Why does the college seem so incurious about the obvious inconsistencies in the witness accounts? Such as what Chris really said to them, how he said it, context, who was in the hall, how far apart people were, etc., etc.Question: Chris was told that it is a violation of college rules to strike another student even in self-defense. If so then why was no one else charged for striking Chris? Is it the college's belief that there was a one-man fight? How did his injuries appear on February 11th as shown in time-stamped photographs that he was not allowed to show?

Question: Is it possible that the college was looking for a way to get rid of Chris Bowler because his father had written a stern letter to the President of Saint Anselm regarding it's scheduling of the debates on Holy Thursday and criticizing the plan to integrate the dorms with respect to gender?

Question: When did Saint Anselm College stop being Catholic?

Question: Which is a Catholic virtue, political correctness or Truth? This college seems much more concerned with appearances than finding the truth and are willing to trash a kid's future to achieve their "diversity" goals.

"This was clearly timed to minimize damage by announcing the decision the day break began - the middle of Holy Week. I didn't expect much better from a school that warmly welcomed Kate Michelman, former president of NARAL Pro-Choice Amrerica a couple of weeks ago," said Steve Bowler, Chris' dad. "Anyone who came here thinking this is a Catholic school is getting ripped off."

Why should you care?

Because once one student is suspended for something he didn't do, you could be next. The real offenders got off completely free. What should you do?

Find out the truth - People talk. Some have consciences. Report what you find out. Pray to Saint Jude - Patron of Hopeless Causes...

  • hey man, best of luck <>... but what happened was truly sad, plain and simple... Most people at that school are arrogant and insecure about their emotions and actions. If you want to proceed with life and what you want to accomplish then mature and grow up to realize what life is all about. What they did will not accomplish anything, if anything they gained disrespect and another aspect of guilt and regret. Keep your hands up Brother.

  • Hang in there Chris! If the Dean or even the school stay's their course, there's always the media. By presenting your facts with what the school has to say will defintely bring attention to the matter.

I'm rooting for ya, and I've got your back if needed.

  • hey chris...i am still really quite shocked about your whole situation & i hope everything works for you in the end.

anyways...take care & good luck with everything!

  • Chris -
I just wanted to say how sorry I am to hear/read about your ordeal. I had heard some vague rumors and stories floating around, but I had no idea that things had escalated so fast. This whole thing is ridiculous, and I keep you & your family in my prayers. Your presence on campus will definitely be missed in these next few weeks, and I hope to see you back in the fall; however, if you chose to go elsewhere (and I can't say I blame you, if the same had happened to me I don't know if I would stay) then I wish you the best of luck. Keep strong, and God Bless -

Happy Easter to you & your family -

  • Hey Chris,
I heard about what happened, and then i read about it more on your website. I was completely shocked, and its so unfair that this happened to you, I couldn't even believe it.
I just wanted to send you a little note because I really really hope that everything works well out for you(and i know that even eventually it will, because you're such a nice person). I will miss seeing you around St A's - God bless, and take care, Chris

  • I just found out about this story through a link on Chris' AIM profile, and to honest, I'm speechless. I met Chris at the Sean Forrest retreat over the summer nearly 3 years ago, and can't imagine a sweeter, gentler, and more Christ-like guy. He is such an inspiration to other young Catholics like myself, in terms of living the faith and just being a genuine person. To hear that an injustice like this happened to someone I hold in such high esteem angers and disheartens me. It breaks my heart to know that there are people, especially at a Catholic University who prioritize politics over the pursuit of the truth. I wish I had something to offer you besides my indignation in this matter; just know that you are all in my prayers. My heart goes out to your whole family, but especially Chris - who I affectionately know as "Muffin Man" :-) - during such a difficult time.
    God bless,

  • Where are the members of the fraternity that you were beaten up for defending? Are they writing letters, protesting, what? Seems the Dean was as out to get them as she was to get you. What about Knights of Columbus on campus. You are a member, right? Are they helping out?

  • dude this whole thing seems rediculous! i cant believe that ur the one responsible for all this...haha like u, chris bowler, would start a fight with someone, this is stupid dude...u should have hudson come back ur case!

  • my heart goes out to you guys. I will send a letter. Just for my own satisfaction. I dont know what his major is but I know for fact that another Catholic College would take him in a heart beat and the tuition is only $6000.00. I work there as well.

  • Chris,
I am praying,Good luck Chris. They are despicable.

By Anonymous Anonymous, At July 3, 2007 12:40 PM

  • Chris,
Public testimony for the truth and the faith is our obligation. You truly
need to press charges. This is an assault case, and as uncomfortable as it
sounds, you are a victim. Friends don't punch you and lie about you.
Forgive all you want, but I would never send my son to that institution now,
and I hope you never return.

That the incident was lied about and you blamed, scapegoated, and ostracized
is a universal tactic of evil in high places. Your parents need to stop
feeling responsible or that they provoked the dean's response.

I pray you find a good school. Just don't throw your pearl before swine
    again.

  • Chris,
Is this new national notoriety...what the College had hoped to achieve?
Are you really Benedictines? Because from what we've learned today (from the Chris Bowler story) you seem much more like the element of fallen human nature that sent St. Benedict retreating from the ugliness of the world...to the solitude of Subiaco. Or are you Benedictines in the Rembert Weakland style...he who played his fiddle (piano) and delved into his depravities while under his devastating leadership, the beautiful Archdiocese of Milwaukee burned into unrecognizable ashes.
This will only get worse before it gets better if your administration is permitted to persist in this sinful arrogance.
For every guy like me who pokes his head up in this disgraceful "Catholic" College muck, there are thousands who feel like it, but settle for permanent negative opinions of Saint Anselm's. "Saint" in this case being a marketing term only.
I wish you a Holy Triduum and a Happy Easter. Realizing that might be a lot to...but we can always hope. And pray.

  • Dear Friends,
I'm outraged with the revelation of the Chris Bowler travesty. May I suggest the obvious...sue the bastards...and call on sympathetic right thinking people everywhere to provide financial support...maybe even on a re-imbursable basis, when the case is adjudicated.

God forsaken places like St. Anselm's are an abomination. They're living a lie and deserve a comeuppance. What diocese is it in? Is the bishop a man?

Tell Chris to check out Steubenville...Franciscan University...2000+ kids who think like he does...who have found the pearl of great price.

  • Chris,
Peace, in Jesus Crucified,Just read your online report. Outrageous!! Please consider filing a criminal
complaint. Embarrass the school--they've asked for it!

Now I know to scratch Saint Anselm's off my list of potential colleges for
    my adolescent boys.

Thanks for fighting the good fight. God bless you!

  • Dear Friends,
I read the article on Spirit Daily about Chris. I will pray for him and for justice. I will also pray that The college return to its Catholic roots. Leave the past to God's mercy.
Leave the future to God's providence.

Fr. Corapi says, "Live the present moment as God's gift... and that's why it's called the present."

By Anonymous Anonymous, At July 3, 2007 12:49 PM

  • Chris,
First let me congratulate you on standing up for your beliefs. It's getting harder and harder to that in our society.
Maybe you should give us the e mail for the college so we can protest on your behalf. Not that I would want to see you go back to that college.
My grandson is also a comitted Catholic he's a freshman at <> He's there because that's where he received the most help But it is very hard because the the priest appointed to the College is soo liberal.
My daughter has contacted the Bishop, but all they will say is they're keeping an eye on him.
May God strengthen you and all our young people exposed to so many dangers.
Praying that God Bless you with extraordinary graces.

  • Chris and his parents should have called the police and pressed charges immediately. They still can. And they should also sue the school for lack of due process.

    Friends,
I read the story about your son on there. Sad. I hope the college comes to their senses, although in my opinion, I'm not sure I'd want to be associated with a college that pulls such stunts.
Good luck on the resolution... we'll be praying for Chris!

  • Chris

This is outrageous. My daughter is a junior and starting to look for a college to attend. We will be certain to not even consider this school. I will pray for Chris Bowler and for St. Anselm. God bless you.

  • Chris

I graduated from St. A's in <>. I just informed the alumni office that I am boycotting this June's <>-year class reunion in protest for Chris. It's disappointing but a sign of the times. I also informed St. A's that I would never consider sending my children there. Shame on them!

By Anonymous Anonymous, At July 3, 2007 12:50 PM

  • Chris

This is very sad indeed. The Dean obviously wanted you out of there because your father challenged them as he should have. Remember, satan is the father of lies. Unfortunately, we as Catholics, especially if we are faithful to the teachings of the church are under attack but what is so amazing is that WE ARE UNDER ATTACK AT OUR OWN INSTITUTIONS for being CATHOLIC. Come (sic) and attend Ave Maria College in Florida. Many of our Catholic Colleges here are no better but this college is excellent. I will keep you in my little prayers. Stay faithful

By Anonymous Anonymous, At July 3, 2007 12:50 PM

  • Mr. Bowler-

I am an older woman who attended college recently and could not believe the persecution students face if they are believers, especially pro life and faithful to the teachings. Tell your son, go be a lawyer so he can help us fight !
May God bless . Have a good Holy Week and a Joyous Easter. There is hope !

By Anonymous Anonymous, At July 3, 2007 12:50 PM

  • Chris -

You Ask: “Why should you care?”

You Answer: “Because once one student is suspended for something he didn't do, you could be next.”

That is not the answer. This is not a selfish personal concern or a slippery slope argument. We should care because we are told to care in Matthew 25 ---- “Whatsoever you do to the least of my brothers you do to Me.”

We should care because our public testimony for the truth and the faith is our obligation, plus it is a witness to sick and dying world. It is a witness to those who are ambivalent and in need of a message. It is a witness to Christians living their faith, not just making claims.

When Christians stand up for justice at a micro level it will impact macro levels. When Christians serve the neediest among us it brings grace and assistance from above to other causes. It simply makes sense to care and to do what we can for others and actually for our own good as well.

By Anonymous Anonymous, At July 3, 2007 12:50 PM

  • I just saw on Spiritdaily the incident that happened with Chris. I am very sorry about it, and we will pray. Chris is really walking in Jesus's shoes, and I feel like we are in the end times! I will pray that the real truth comes out. It sounds like Chris should be in a different school.
